Good Morning! 🌞

Did you know that Ernest Hemingway’s birthday was today in 1899?

"Night is always darker before the dawn and life is the same, the hard times will pass, every thing will get better and sun will shine brighter then ever." ~ Ernest Hemingway

‘Bejeweled Ring’ Spotted in Space

James Webb Space Telescope image shows gravitational lensing of a quasar – ESA NASA SWNS

A new image from the James Webb Space Telescope shows a quasar shining in the cosmos. Quasars are the bright centers of active galaxies, powered by supermassive black holes consuming vast amounts of gas.

Astronomers observed the quasar, RX J1131-1231, through gravitational lensing. This phenomenon magnifies distant objects, allowing astronomers to study those too faint or far away. Located about six billion light-years from Earth in the constellation Crater, RX J1131-1231 is one of the best-lensed quasars found. The foreground galaxy distorts the quasar’s image into a bright arc of four images.

Named the Webb Telescope’s “Picture of the Month,” the image was described by the European Space Agency (ESA) as a “bejeweled ring.” NASA shared it with the caption, “Diamonds of the season,” noting that the “gems” are actually four images of the same quasar.

According to ESA, gravitational lensing, predicted by Einstein, acts as a natural telescope, magnifying light from distant quasars and offering a rare chance to study regions near black holes. "All matter in the Universe warps the space around itself, with larger masses producing a stronger effect. Around very massive objects, such as galaxies, light that passes close by follows this warped space, appearing to bend away from its original path by a clearly visible amount."

The image was captured with Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) as part of a program to study dark matter, the invisible substance making up most of the Universe’s mass. Webb’s quasar observations are helping astronomers explore dark matter at smaller scales than ever before.

A Band of Brothers

A Band of Brothers is a charity organization in the UK started by a man named Conroy Harris.

Conroy’s mission is to bring direction and accountability, as well as understanding, to young men who have been through the criminal justice system and want to change their lives for the better.

I found an article on Positive.news written by Conroy and it addresses a very human desire: The desire to dismiss people who have not yet overcome their issues as toxic and irredeemable. This is something Conroy still struggles with, but it seems that overcoming it is well worth the effort.

I have linked the article below. It is short, but very thought provoking.

A 100 Year Old Olympic Comparison

The Olympic games are now only 5 days away and I found this article by NBC News, which shows a very interesting side to this Olympic game.

The last time the Olympics were hosted in Paris was the summer of 1924, 100 years ago. The article features numerous pictures from the 1924 games and also some pictures from where the events will take place this year.

One of the things I find interesting is an seeming element of chaos in a few of the events that I don’t think you would see nowadays. Namely the pictures of the 10,000 meter race and the cross country race that looks more rugged than I expect we will see this year.

Regardless, I hope we will be able to see more comparisons like this one once the games begin.
