Good Morning! 🌞

We decided to share this video, not because it is “positive” but because of the powerful reminder it shares of that day. Even in the midst of terror, “beauty” can be found.

Starlink to Provide Free Emergency Phone Coverage

Starlink is seeking approval to enable 911 calls from wilderness areas, aiming to improve search and rescue operations and reduce fatalities.

Elon Musk’s satellite network has been used in various scenarios, including enabling communication in Ukraine during the war. Now, a partnership between Starlink and T-Mobile is seeking FCC approval for a direct-to-cellular service that would allow people in remote areas, like mountains and forests, to contact emergency services.

"SpaceX Starlink will provide emergency services access for mobile phones for people in distress for free," Musk announced on X, formerly Twitter. "This applies worldwide, subject to approval by country governments. No one should die because they forgot, or couldn't afford, to pay."

The direct-to-cellular service isn't just for emergencies. The FCC chairwoman referred to the application as the start of a "single-network future," where users won’t need to worry about network coverage or service availability; connections will work everywhere, all the time.

Newsweek reports that Musk's proposed service aims to eliminate mobile "dead zones" by using T-Mobile's PCS G Block spectrum to provide extra coverage from space. Wilderness areas, which lack terrestrial towers, could benefit from Musk's satellites, offering service to lost hikers or explorers in need. Instead of being transmitted through traditional electromagnetic waves, the signal would reach space, and the satellites would relay the call to emergency services.

As much hate as Musk gets, making this a possibility is a true game-changer and will save many lives!

LEGO to Switch to Renewable Plastics

Markus Spiske – public domain.

LEGO has committed to covering the cost of increasing recycled plastic in its bricks to 50% by 2026. This move is expected to raise production costs by about 70%, but the company’s CEO, Niels Christiansen, has stated that LEGO will absorb these expenses. The goal is to drive growth in the recycled plastic industry, eventually bringing down costs.

Despite a tough year for the toy industry, LEGO’s operating revenue surged by 26%, driven by a broad product range appealing to all age groups. Sets inspired by Star Wars, Harry Potter, community creativity, and even adult-focused products like bonsai trees and Lamborghinis contributed to record profits.

Christiansen isn't stopping there. LEGO is investing over $350 million over the next eight years to replace up to half of the fossil fuels in its plastics with sustainable alternatives made from used cooking oil, food industry waste fats, or recycled plastics. These sustainable materials are currently two to three times more expensive than fossil fuels, but LEGO is committed to not passing these costs onto consumers. Instead, the company will cover the costs in hopes that the market for these materials will mature and become more affordable.

Additionally, LEGO has expanded its Replay program, where users send in unwanted bricks to be repurposed for new sets. Over a million pounds of bricks have already been collected, resulting in more than 400,000 sets of repurposed LEGO pieces being given to children.
