Surprising 'Ozempic Babies' Phenomenon

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), roughly one in six women globally face infertility, prompting many to explore various treatments ranging from acupuncture and herbal supplements to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy.

However, as reported by CBS12's Dani Travis, there's an emerging trend of women experiencing unexpected pregnancies while on weight loss medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy, despite using birth control or having previous fertility issues.

Dr. Melanie Altizer, Chief of Obstetrics at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, mentioned that this trend has led to the term "Ozempic babies." These are surprising pregnancies arising from the use of Semaglutide, a medication originally not intended for enhancing fertility.

Dr. Leah Roberts, a specialist in reproductive endocrinology & fertility at Boca Fertility IVF Center, highlighted the significant impact of these drugs on patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), many of whom are obese and struggle with weight loss—a key factor in their fertility issues. Semaglutide has shown promising results in inducing significant weight loss and restoring normal ovulation in these patients.

Dr. Roberts explained that substantial weight loss can rejuvenate fertility, leading to unexpected pregnancies. However, Dr. Altizer cautioned that Semaglutide could also reduce the effectiveness of birth control by accelerating its metabolism, which may lead to unplanned pregnancies.

Both physicians advised against using these medications as a method to induce pregnancy due to the lack of research on their effects on fetal development and their interaction with reproductive health. They also noted that weight loss could enhance fertility in men, potentially increasing a couple’s chances of conception.

The doctors underscored the need for further research and clinical trials to fully understand the interactions of weight loss drugs with the reproductive system in both men and women.

Depending on further research, this could be a very positive breakthrough for couples struggling with fertility.

Possible Discovery: Augustus's Death Villa

The scope of the excavations – credit University of Tokyo

Excavations at a Roman villa, believed to have been inhabited by Caesar Augustus during the early Imperial era, offer intriguing insights into the life of one of history's most significant figures. Situated in Somma Vesuviana, the villa suffered partial destruction and burial during the eruption that engulfed Pompeii in 79 CE. Positioned on the northern slopes of Mount Vesuvius, it aligns with historical accounts suggesting that Augustus passed away in a villa in this vicinity, albeit with limited corroborative details.

Roman records indicate Augustus' demise in a villa north of Vesuvius, hinting at opulence befitting a leader who famously transformed Rome from a city of stone to one of marble. Presently, a team of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo, active in the area since 2022, is undertaking excavations, offering a window into this pivotal period of Roman history.

Their findings shed light on the villa's pre-eruption state, uncovering rooms and artifacts indicative of considerable wealth. Discoveries such as amphorae for wine storage and evidence of fire-heated baths hint at the villa owner's affluent lifestyle. Moreover, the presence of a second, more grandiose structure featuring marble columns, statues, and expansive architecture suggests a public or ceremonial function.

As the excavation progresses, clues emerge linking the villa to Augustus, whose legacy includes expanding the Roman Empire, ushering in an era of relative peace known as the Pax Romana, and laying the groundwork for centuries of stability. From his origins as Gaius Octavius to his ascension as Emperor Augustus, his role in shaping Western civilization remains profound, culminating in his famous parting words, "Acta est fabula, plaudite" – (The play has been performed; applaud!) a poignant reflection on his enduring legacy.

Original ‘Star Trek’ Enterprise Model Finally Found

Heritage Auctions

Nearly half a century after disappearing, the original model of the USS Starship Enterprise from “Star Trek” has been returned to its rightful home. This 33-inch model, featured in the opening credits of the original series, now resides with Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the series creator.

“After five decades, I’m thrilled that someone happened upon this historic model of the USS Enterprise,” Roddenberry, known as "Rod," stated in a Heritage Auctions release. “I remember how it used to adorn my dad’s desk.”

The model went missing after Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry (who passed away in 1991), lent it out for 1979’s "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and it was never returned. Its whereabouts remained a mystery until it surfaced on eBay last fall with an opening bid of $1,000.

The listing, titled “Rare Custom Star Trek USS Enterprise Spaceship by Richard Datin," revealed that it was crafted from solid wood by model maker Richard Datin of the Howard Anderson special-effects company. The New York Times’ Emily Schmall reported that the seller had found it in a storage unit and, following multiple inquiries, reached out to Heritage Auctions.

“Our experts confirmed its authenticity, and we immediately contacted Rod to return the model to its rightful place,” said Joe Maddalena, executive vice president at Heritage Auctions. “We’re thrilled the Enterprise is back in safe harbor.”

The details of the ship’s journey during the missing years remain unknown, and rumors had even circulated that Roddenberry might have thrown it into a pool when he was a boy, according to Jamie Stengle of the Associated Press. It has an estimated value of over $1 million at auction, and Maddalena describes the model as a "priceless" artifact of television history.

Roddenberry remarked with amusement that it finally cleared up a rumor that, as a young boy, he had destroyed it by throwing it in a pool. “Finally I’m vindicated after all these years,” he said laughing.
